About Us

Family

Hello. We are Richard and Lesley Smith and we run Street End Farm, a 400 acre arable family farm on rolling chalk Downland near Bishops Waltham in Hampshire. Our farm lies within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and we take pride in conserving the natural beauty of the farm and protecting its wildlife.

We specialize in growing sunflowers and millet, but we also grow many other seed crops which we use specifically in our wild bird seed mixes. Because we grow such a diverse range of crops – we have seeds galore on the farm all year round – a great place for wild birds to live and breed! We plant acres of wild bird cover and we actively manage our hedgerows to provide a range of different types and sizes of hedge for our wild birds . A high percentage of the farm is used for spring- sown crops, which means we have acres of over-wintered stubble providing attractive nesting habitats for farmland birds. In the past few years we have seen significant increases in the numbers of Skylarks, Lapwings and English Partridge on the farm, as well as seed-eating finches and particularly Yellowhammers. Lapwing numbers have been dwindling in the UK- according to the BTO numbers dropped 40% between 1970 and 1998 – and we are thrilled to see them increasing in numbers on our farm.

Richard has had a keen interest in nature, conservation and wild bird life for many years, and this particular interest, combined with his farming experience, sparked off an idea in the early 1980's to develop a range of wild bird foods using grains and seeds grown at home. He started with a selection of home- grown ingredients, a mixing board and a large shovel, and The Really Wild Bird Food Company was created!

Thanks to hungry wild birds in Hampshire our business has flourished and we have recently installed a new mixing unit to keep up with demand.

At Street End Farm we concentrate on producing the best quality seeds and mixes for your wild birds, and unlike most other bird food companies which merely import and sell-on food, we grow, clean, mix and pack our own. So your birds can enjoy the best - direct from our farm.

The Need To Feed Wild Birds

The RSPB and BTO now agree that we should feed wild birds all year round. During winter, they require high energy, high fat food (such as suet) for warmth in cold weather and to survive periods of food shortage. During the summer months and breeding season, wild birds require high energy, high protein foods, like mealworms and sunflower hearts, especially when breeding and moulting. Over 50% of adults in the UK feed wild birds in their garden, for enjoyment. Most likely visitors are starlings, house sparrows, blackbirds, blue and great tits, robins, greenfinches, collared doves, dunnocks, song thrushes, chaffinches and occasionally great spotted woodpeckers, nuthatches, coal tits, marsh tits, long tailed tits and siskin. Teasel and nyger ( niger ) seed attracts goldfinches.

Good quality food should be fed regularly from seed feeders, mesh peanut feeders, mesh nut feeders, bird tables, ground feeding trays and hoppers. Scatter food on the lawn for thrushes and dunnocks Good hygiene is vital. To reduce disease, clean feeding areas regularly and move feeding sites around the garden
