September News from Street End Farm
Alan Titchmarsh filming at our farm!
In August, we were delighted and excited to be visited by a TV production company called Tiger Aspect, who were filming a four-part documentary titled ‘Seasons’, to be shown on ITV in October (I will let you know the dates when they are confirmed). The documentary is narrated by Alan and features interesting aspects of the four Great British seasons. The production team came to the farm to capture our sunflowers as part of the summer episode. This year our sunflowers are definitely the best crop we have ever grown; Richard spent more time preparing the ground before planting and then the glorious June weather really gave them a great start. The film crew had a tight filming schedule and as you can see from the ‘photos, they were just a week or so early to capture the magnificence of the flowers in full bloom. A little bit of cutting and pasting some of the sunflower heads in bloom – gave Alan a yellow (ish) background! Alan was a charming man and was really interested in the work we are doing on the farm – and Richard gave him some horticultural advice!
Steve Cook reaches final of Farmer’s Weekly competition
Congratulations to our agronomist, Steve Cook, of Hampshire Arable Systems, who has successfully reached the final of the prestigious Farmer’s Weekly ‘Agronomist of the Year’ Competition. As an agronomist, Steve works closely with Richard advising him on all aspects of growing our crops. We were delighted when Steve elected to use our farm as his showcase farm for the competition. He chose us because of the diverse range of crops we are growing for our bird seed business, (which present a unique set of challenges in our UK climate) and because all these crops looked absolutely stunning this year and yielded superbly -great teamwork! The winner will be announced at a dinner in London in October – so Good Luck Steve, we are all keeping our fingers crossed for you!
The Big Seed Mix
In response to customers’ requests for a seed mix with fewer smaller seeds, we have created a new mix - the imaginatively named BIG SEED MIX! This superb new mix contains only large seeds. No canary seed, millet, rape, linseed or wheat. So if you find that the birds in your garden leave the small seeds uneaten - this mix is definitely for them - and you! The Big Seed Mix is a balanced blend of home grown black sunflowers, small striped sunflowers, naked oats, buckwheat, safflower, and peanut granules, and it is currently on special offer until the end of September.

To offer our customers more choice we have introduced standard peanuts as an alternative to our premium peanuts. These Standards are good, wholesome, red skin peanuts; less consistent in size, and with some skins off, but really good value!
And please be assured - these peanuts are also 'nil detectable aflatoxin' status - the safest standard there is. A good product at a great price!
