Chicken Feed FAQs
- What is the best food for chickens?
Grain-based chicken feeds are best for ensuring that each hen's nutritional needs are being met. It’s also important to make sure your chickens are consuming some form of grit as part of their diet.
Chickens aren’t particularly fussy eaters, and on occasion can eat a wide variety of different raw fruits and vegetables. In fact, certain fresh fruits like strawberries, bananas and watermelons (in moderation) can make a nice treat for a chicken! Just avoid citrus fruits as these are not suitable for poultry.
- What can chickens NOT eat?
When selecting food for chickens, it's extremely important to avoid:
- Citrus fruits
- Chocolate
- Sweets
- Junk food
- Mouldy food
- Why is grit important for poultry?
Hens in particular require high levels of grit in their diet to ensure that they develop strong eggs. Without grit, the eggs they lay will have soft shells that break too easily. Grit is an excellent source of calcium and helps to keep a chicken's bones strong.
Another important use for grit is that it actually helps poultry animals to digest their food – without grit, food can become lodged in a bird's stomach and cannot pass through their digestive system.
