Where should I put my garden nest box?

  • Choose a quiet location, away from paths and other busy areas.
  • Avoid areas where cats and other predators could hide.
  • Keep your nest box away from any feeding stations - this will help to ensure that your nesting birds aren't disturbed by other birds who drop by to use the feeders.
  • If possible, position your nesting box so that it faces north east. This will help to protect it from extreme weather. Never place a nest box facing south.
  • Tilt the box forward a bit to keep heavy rain from hitting the entrance hole.
  • Installing multiple nest boxes? Space them out a bit - most wild bird species prefer to be separate from other nests. (Exceptions include starlings and house sparrows, who prefer to nest in groups.)

One more tip: don’t fill your nest box with nesting material. It's better to offer wood shavings, sheep's wool, dog hair or horse hair in an old wire feeder - that way, your garden birds can help themselves and make the nest their own!
