There are many reasons birds may be throwing seed out of the seed feeder. Perhaps the most obvious explanation is, if you have put out a seed mix, birds will often dig through the mix to find the ingredient they prefer.
There are many simple ways to prevent spilled seed – you can use a seed tray to catch any spilled seed, use a no mess bird feed to ensure that any spilled seed doesn’t germinate, or if your local birds are exceptionally picky, try switching to a differentseed mix to one they will be less likely to throw.
When stored correctly (in a clean, air tight container – ideally a bird food storage bin), bird seed can last up to 6-12 months, depending on the type of seed. Be sure to store your bird seed somewhere dry and out of reach of rodents/insects to ensure it stays fresher for longer.
