Bee & Bug Biome
Winner of European Consumers Choice Award 2014 Top Scoring with 9.1
"It took some ladybugs 10 minutes to invade that little house made for them. I do not know how they knew that the place was meant for them, Anyway it was the habitat they had been wanted for a long time in the garden."
The Bee & Bug Biome is an attractive bee and bug habitat in a gift pack that provides a home for solitary bees, ladybirds and other beneficial insects and comes with a FREE pack of wildflower seed plus a FREE bee guide.
Manufactured from durable natural sustainably sourced timber, this attractive insect habitat looks good in any garden and provides a purpose built habitat for a wide range of insects like solitary bees that will pollinate plants and flowers plus some like ladybirds and lacewings that will prey on garden pests like aphids.
The Bee & Bug Biome is supplied in a colourful gift pack and makes the perfect gift for gardeners and nature-lovers alike.
Site your Bee & Bug Biome in a sheltered position from floor level up to 2 metres above ground level on a wall, shed, fence or pole or similar. It is important that it faces South to South East to catch the morning sun. Do not site under shaded tree canopies.
The top chamber will encourage safe solitary bees to nest and features seven wooden nesting tubes in a bee block & bamboo tubes of various sizes. The larger feeding hole is for insects such as ladybirds, earwigs & lacewings. Why not try some Ladybird Food/Attractant to encourage them in.
Monitoring & Inspection
If you see the bee block & tubes filled by the end of summer, it is a good idea to cover them with a piece of chicken wire 25mm from the face of the biome to prevent woodpecker attack. The lower chamber is filled with pine cones to provide nooks and crannies for beneficial insects such as lacewings who are great natural predators of aphids. The wooden retainer dowel can be removed so that alternative natural materials such as straw or bark can be introduced to provide a safe over-wintering habitat for lacewings, ladybirds, wood louse, earwigs etc. Try attracting lacewings in Autumn with Wildlife World Lacewing Attractant.
To keep your Bug & Bee Biome looking its best, you can paint it annually with a water-based exterior paint. What Species Might Use My Habitat? Use your Species Guide to help identify the solitary bees, mining bees and hoverflies visiting the Bee and Bug Biome and plant the native wild flower seeds to attract helpful pollinators to your garden
These products are for wild creatures and as such, you should not expect immediate habitation. The product can then be re-visited 6 - 12 months later, or in the appropriate season, to see if it is being used.
If after 24 months the product has not been used, it may be worth choosing an alternative location to site it and/or look to see what improvements you can make to provide a suitable environment for your target species (flowers, woodpiles, rough areas of garden etc)
Because many species of creature are constantly seeking refuge and safe nesting sites, you may find that an unexpected species is using your product - this is part of nature and all species should be welcomed as part of your wildlife garden.
