This year looks like it's going to be a bumper one for nature's bounty. Our hedgerows and bushes are festooned with nuts and berries. We have been out and about picking blackberries for crumbles and pies...and perhaps a few bottles of blackberry tipple to see us through the winter months!

The hazelnut bushes in our garden are laden with nuts; the main problem we have is how to harvest them before the squirrels pinch them all. It's proving quite a challenge!

Many of our customers worry at this time of year that their garden birds will desert them. This is normal; they need time to moult, and then they will head off into the hedges to enjoy nature's food. But please don't worry – they will return. And while your feeders are quiet, it's a good opportunity for repair work and cleaning.

Spring is upon us - not that you'd know it from the cold, wet and miserable weather! This is the time of year when garden bird numbers soar as fledglings appear en masse.

This is also the most critical time of year to offer quality, easy-to-digest bird food (especially if the weather is inclement and the insect population is low, which is certainly the case right now).

Fledgling birds need to be fed smaller food that is suitable for their diets. If there are fledging birds in your garden, feed them a seed mix for fledglings, including foods like peanut granules and naked oats.

Fledgling is the stage in a flying animal's life between hatching or birth and becoming capable of flight. Fledging is the term mostly used for birds but it can also be used for baby bats! In this blog, we answer your most asked questions about baby birds!

If you see a baby bird on the ground - all alone and seemingly abandoned by its parents - your first instinct may be to offer the fledgling a helping hand.

However, in most cases, you should not intervene. Yes, it's hard not to feel sorry for a young bird who appears to be struggling, but your attempt to assist may end up interfering with a critical stage of the fledgling's development. Birds have to learn to stand on their own two feet and fly on their own two wings!
