It’s currently Hedgehog Awareness Week (4^th – 10^th May 2025) and this year’s theme is ‘Give Hedgehogs the Edge!’. In this blog, we will explain what that theme means for our spikey friends and discuss other ways you can support them this year.

Give Hedgehogs the Edge This Hedgehog Awareness Week

Hedgehog Awareness Week is organised by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) to highlight the problems hedgehogs face and what we can do to help them. This year, the BHPS are asking people to ‘give hedgehogs the edge’ by leaving the edges of their gardens and green spaces to grow wild!

Wild edges and log piles help to attract natural food and offer shelter to hedgehogs in need, giving them a much-needed boost after a long hibernation and before their breeding season in May and June.

How Else Can I Help My Local Hedgehogs?

Here are some of the simple steps you can take to help your local hedgehogs this Spring:

• Create a hedgehog highway! Encourage each person on your street to make a small gap in their garden wall or fence (about 5 inches square - the size of a CD case) for hedgehogs to crawl through.
  
  
• Offer shelter, food and water for the hedgehogs who pass through your garden.
  
  
• Check for hedgehogs before using a lawn mower, electric strimmer or garden fork.
  
  
• Cover up drains and any other holes that a hedgehog might fall into.
  
  
• Stop using poisons and pesticides that could directly harm wildlife and destroy the food chain.
