Around this time of year (mid to late November) when average daily temperatures start to fall and the seeds, masts and fruits in the hedgerows are pretty much eaten up, garden birds will start to return to your feeders. The seed-eaters like tits, finches, robins, dunnocks, blackbirds etc will visit feeders and will fill up on dry seed. However, it is a bit like having toast in the morning without an accompanying cup of tea if you don't also offer them clean drinking water!

Most garden birds do need to drink at least twice a day. They lose water through respiration and droppings. Really lucky people have a free-flowing stream or river running through their gardens and will notice that birds will find easy access points where they can drink and bathe in relative safety. For us less fortunate, putting out a birdbath, or an upturned metal dustbin lid, and keeping the supply of water clean, will be gratefully received. Here are a few water 'top tips' to make winter healthy for your birds and easy for you! More...

Robins are inquisitive and trusting birds and with a little TLC, some perseverance and some yummy tempting food ( especially of the wriggling variety! ) you can encourage them to feed from your hand, which is always thrilling when it happens. We shouldn't lose sight of how much we can do to help our garden birds, particularly by feeding them bird food of the highest quality, and please don't worry - it is impossible to help too much!

Food that we put out will always be a supplement to natural supplies. If nature offers great bounty - the birds will be there! You can see this is true at this time of year when most garden birds desert us in favour of hedgerows full of fruit, berries, seeds and nuts. More...

chaffinches

Papilloma viruses in chaffinches give rise to warty growths - which have colloquially been called "tassel foot", and I think you would agree, looking at the photographs which have been kindly sent to me by David White, it is a very good descriptor.

Papilloma viruses in humans cause skin warts, which are very common but usually resolve spontaneously. In fact, I remember as a child, my Dad 'buying my warts from me' for a 5p (or maybe it was a sixpence?) - and magically they used to vanish! I think he just got his timing about right. More...

This year, for the first time, we have been trialling the use of Mustard as a 'Green Manure' in the fields that will grow our naked oats and millet next year. We are hoping this will help grow us a bumper crop next summer.

One of the best things about green manure is that is saves us money! More...

Doctor Doolittle talked to the animals and now you can practice your own bird song technique with this diverse range of bird callers and whistles.

Each whistle is beautifully crafted (usually from wood) with various finger holes, sliders or unique features to allow you to learn and replicate the voice of your chosen bird species.

Have a look at the videos and master the calls.…. then see if the birds will recognise your song? Fun and educational for young and old.
